SoCoVelo Members – are you up for a challenge?

On Saturday, December 6th, Kids on Bikes will be hosting a 12-hour Trainer Challenge from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the SRAM facility in Colorado Springs. Please join the SoCoVelo team in continuing to support the mission of Kids on Bikes by signing up to ride and assist with fundraising.

We’ve set a team goal to raise $2,000 for Kids on Bikes during this challenge.

The Ride

Time slots: Sign up for a time slot of one hour between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. If you want to (or are willing to) ride more than one time slot, we can accommodate that depending on how many of the club members wish to sign up. (There are 80 registered members of SoCoVelo, so we should be able to easily fill all the time slots.)

Sign up for a time slot(s) at this link (there are 2 tabs!): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q-J1vKKfEgXabnQAM5ynp0SgJqjvhQavM6UpsUc4xlg/edit?usp=sharing

Where: SRAM, at 850 Elkton Drive, Colorado Springs, north of Garden of the Gods Road.

Arrival: Please arrive at least a half-hour prior to your registered time slot, with your bike and gear. This will help ensure that you can be prepared to ride and that we can have everything ready to easily and quickly swap your bike onto the trainer so you can be ready to pedal.

Trainer: I’m planning to make my TacX Neo 2T available for this challenge. You will need a road or gravel bike compatible with the trainer. It supports Shimano/SRAM 9-11 speed and should support most Shimano 12 speed cassettes. It does not support Shimano micro-spline, SRAM XD/XD-R, Campagnolo, or Zwift Cog and Click.

If your bike is not compatible with those standards (e.g. you run a Campagnolo freehub, etc.) please contact me directly as we may be able to make alternate arrangements, find another trainer, etc.

App: Kids on Bikes is working with TrainingPeaks to arrange for recording the rides. More information will be available soon. I’ve asked that there be a way for each rider to record their ride so that you can transfer the data to Strava or some other platform.

Hydration and snacks: Water and coffee will be available; there will also be a hydration sponsor for the event. Some limited snacks will be available but if you want more substantial food, please plan to bring it with you. Or there are several restaurants available along Garden of the Gods Road if you want to eat before or after your ride.

The Fundraising

The reason: We are helping to raise funds during this challenge to help Kids on Bikes support its ongoing mission of getting more children on bikes to safely enjoy the freedom of riding.

The platform: Kids on Bikes is using a fundraising platform called Givebutter to handle the logistics for promoting and collecting donations for this challenge.

To sign up on Givebutter: In addition to signing up for a time slot to ride on the SoCoVelo site, you will need to separately sign up for the challenge on Givebutter for fundraising. Here’s how to get set up:

  1. Click on this LINK
  2. Scroll down and click on the purple button labeled "Join/Create a Team"
  3. Enter your first and last name, email address, and phone number, and create a password (be sure to save this somewhere secure). You can also upload a profile photo if you wish. When finished, click the button that says “Sign Up”.
  4. On the next screen, make sure that “Join a Team” is selected. Then, under the item “Team to Join,” click the drop-down menu to select Southern Colorado Velo.
  5. Enter your fundraising goal. Our suggested fundraising goal is $250 per individual, which should allow us to make our team goal easily.
  6. Add in a personal story or fun reason why you are deciding to take on this challenge.
  7. Click the button labeled "Join this fundraiser."

To raise funds: once you have signed up, you should already be signed in. If not, you can use the “Log In” button at https://givebutter.com to log in. Then, do the following:

  • 1.      Be sure you are on the main page for the 12-hour challenge. If you have just logged in, you will be on your “My Profile” page. You can scroll down on this page and click the 12-hour Trainer Challenge under the title “Campaigns I’m fundraising for.”
  • 2.      Once you are on the campaign page, scroll down to the Team Members list and click on the icon above your name. You will then see a section that looks like the screen shot below; click on the link labeled “Share & Manage” at the upper right.
  • 3.      You can then copy the link given and send it to potential donors or use the “Invite Donors” feature to have Givebutter send out the requests and reminders. You can also edit your page to give more information about your fundraising.

I am the team organizer on GiveButter, so please let me know if you encounter any issues and I will do my best to help. Also, I will be monitoring the team status on GiveButter to reconcile fundraisers with the list of members who have signed up to ride the challenge. Perhaps more importantly – please contact me if you need assistance with messaging and ideas for fundraising, as I’ve done this in the past for Tour de Cure.
